• I understand that a male goldfish will chase a female into a position that she releases her eggs. At that time, the male will milt over the expelled eggs to fertilize them. We have had this single fish for over a month and I have no explanation to why we now have eggs and baby fish. I'm trying to figure this out so I can explain it to my 12 year old daughter and of course, know myself.

  • .......wow, that is amazing.

I hope someone can figure this out, I'm interested in knowing.

  • have you ever thought that the fish was already pregnant when you bought it? Dont listen to some people when they say big words like genetic material causes fish to give birth, you probably just won the fish while it was pregnant. When goldfish get pregnant, it takes about 1 and a half months to lay eggs so you probably did win it while it was pregnant.

  • Sounds like you were given a female livebearer, a guppy or platy perhaps?

A common goldfish needs to be about 6" long to breed, and a male to fertilise the eggs, that makes me think you have a livebearer of some sort.

If you post a picture some one will be able to ID it for you.

  • I think your fish was pregnant. If it was fat is probably was pregnant at one point when you got it. It takes about a month to lay the eggs. Just so you know it is rare for a fish to get pregnant. It is like a two in fifty chance.

  • I'm assuming you mean that the goldfish was the only fish in the tank for over a month before the eggs appeared.

If so, this is indeed very mysterious. Goldfish do not have internal fertilization (unlike guppies, for example), and I've never heard of parthenogenesis (unfertilized eggs developing into fry) in goldfish. Female goldfish will sometimes expel eggs in the absence of a male, but these unfertilized eggs don't develop or hatch into live babies. To top off this mystery, the goldfish given out as carnival prizes are usually small juveniles that are far from sexual maturity.

Are you certain there aren't any other fish around that could have laid those eggs?

I know this is unlikely, but is there any chance the fish was misidentified, and what you have is really a livebearing species, such as a gold platy or a gold molly?

Try to raise the babies. You may be on the trail of some new scientific discovery.

  • Maybe you need to talk to your mom about this.

  • You are correct, this doesn't make any sense. Are you sure this is a goldfish? There are live bearers that can store sperm for a long time and give live birth for several months after being with a male though I don't know of any egg laying fish that can do this. This is incredible and unique. Contact your local ichthyologist. A University would love to hear about this and if you within a couple hundred miles of Chicago I would love to hear about and purchase the baby fish because there is more to this. Did you add any plants to the aquarium or other items that may have had eggs on them already? I would love to find out how this puzzle turns out because this doesn't make any seance.

  • it's magic

  • That's interesting you should raise the babies so you can find out what they are

  • some fish can fertilize there own eggs

  • not all fish follow this procedure, some lay eggs, some give birth and some dont need a man fish they just produce off spring instead. it would depend on the tye of fish. Not sure what gold fish follow though sorry

  • Depending on the species of goldfish they can keep a store of genetic material in reserve (they need to of done the deed already with a male) and can fertilise there eggs when an environment which can support a larger population is found. It means your doing a good job at keeping your fish basically and the larger the tank the larger your population and fish should grow. If you need a larger tank but don't want to spend any cash look into freecycle the one in my area has tanks all the time. Oh and welcome to the world of fish incest they're not picky ;).

You may want to keep the babies seperate if the tank is small and Seamonkeys are very good for feeding bay fish as they're tiny and packed with protein.

  • You should try to identify what sort of fish you have. Go to places that sell aquarium fish and look for the same kind as what you have, or bring it to the store and have them identify it. Maybe it is just a white Goldfish. Maybe it's a Koi, or Molly, it matters because different fish need different care.

Take the babies to be identified too. Are they fish, and not an aquatic insect or something? What could have had access to the tank? Something that came in the water?

Baby fish (fry) have tiny bodies and big eyes, and not much color til they get a bit older, but they look like fish even while still absorbing the last of the yolk-sac.

The fish you got was probably a juvenile, and incapable of reproducing yet, so the question is, whose eggs were they?

To move the babies, you could try a siphon-hose, at least 1/2 inch diameter, with no tight places in it. Siphon them out of the tank, and into a roomy bucket, then you can carefully pour off excess water, and move them to where you want.

  • Its pregnant. WEIRDLY ENOUGH
