• Streaming vob files from a ftp source doesnt work here anymore. It DOES work when I chose to play with DVDPlayer but it just doesnt work with MPlayer.

Is this broken in the new build because XBMC Build Aug 28, 2006 plays the same file on the same location just fine.
I'm using a softmoded Xbox 1.0 with the latest build of XBMC.

I posted the debug info below when trying to play a vob file from a ftp location

  • touché

  • - 03-10-2006 fixed: ftp playback in mplayer where broken due to yet another url parsing mistake

    elupus corrected his mistake :)

  • wtf are you talking about.

you can play media straight from stored rars.

  • Seeking hasnt worked in a while when doing the xbox2xbox ftp bookmarks. Like elupus said, it used to... then stopped.
Rar's don't work either. You have to open the .avi (or whatever media format). There are programs to unrar on the actual xbox (99% sure) but I reckon it's easier to just unrar before transfer.

  • those filenames are truely whacked up

Yes they are named by the Kiss recorder (PVR)
BTW : I've tested it with short simple filenames like timeshift.vob and its exactly the same problem

Again it worked great before this release, a shame support for this has been dropped while it was working fine.
    I can't see why ?

  • no,

i just put a completely irrelevant comment in the thread ;D

  • Yes I see. I just don't understand why it isn't working anymore with such a big release while before it was working just fine (both MPlayer and DVDPlayer)

Actually with this release it is even working but only if you choose manually to play it with DVDPlayer, but MPlayer just ignores it ? Maybe something that was overlooked?

  • Sorry, let me try to state my point more clearly:

The previous version of XBMC I had installed (Oct '05?), when you played a movie from an FTP source, you could skip forward/back just like it was on the local drive. The default player when you opened a file on FTP source allowed seeking.

XBMC 2.0: clicking on a file on FTP source doesn't do anything. No default player? File can be played by manually selecting player. "URL parsing bug" noted and fixed for next build.

XBMC Oct-03-06 build: Files on FTP source open when clicked. But can't seek. Manually choosing 'DVD Player' for files allows seeking.

So, what I'd like is, to be able to open & seek through files on an FTP source just like I used to. Is it a 'bug' that I can't? Or is it that way on purpose for some reason?

Of course, if UPnP streaming becomes an option for xbox2xbox streaming, my nitpicking will be moot. Let me say again how awesome XBMC & everyone who contributes to the project is.

Jeez, I don't know if I succeeded in stating ANYthing more clearly.

  • FYI; after 2.0.1 is ready and out, c0diq has promissed to look into implementing a UPnP-server into XBMC, if that goes aheat then that will be optimal for streaming audio and video between multiple Xboxes (as XBMC already have a built-in UPnP-client)

  • yea it may have worked when we used internal ftp client of mplayer, after we switched to curl instead, we were forced to turn of seeking otherwise mplayer wouldn't start at all. I still don't know what is going on.

  • the FTP protocol was never designed for streaming, see http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=Types_of_Bookmarks#FTP_.28File_Tra nsfer_Protocol.29_ClientXBMC also contains an FTP-client with which you can add bookmarks in all sections (except for My Program), however as FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is not designed to stream audio/video data it is not recommended that you use it under the My Music nor in the My Videos sections.Trying to stream audio or video via FTP is not recommended. (Remember that the default FTP-port is usually 21).it was really only implemented into XBMC for file transfer/copying (under the file-manager)

  • worked fine for me atleast (not from another xbox, but that really shouldnt matter)

  • I will just assume that it will work for everything, not just vobs.

    Thanks for getting this fixed.

Because of you guys frowning on ftp streaming I bought a server with over 1TB of space and setup an SMB server.

Still, I have 250gb drives in all my xboxes so still need ftp streaming to work.
    Cheers.

  • no. seeking doesnt work properly with mplayer.

if you rar first it does however

  • those filenames are truely whacked up

  • FYI: Installed Oct-3 build last night. Files play over FTP now when opened :o but you can't fast-forward or skip back. :(

Manually choosing "Play Using->DVD Player" plays the file and you can skip around.

    Another slight parsing mistake?

  • spiff,

when you say seeking via ftp streaming works when using RARs...do you mean when the avi file is broken into 10-20 small RARd parts all stacked ? or do you mean just RARing the entire video file in to one RAR file?

im just trying to get seeking over ftp..

    tks.

  • - 03-10-2006 fixed: ftp playback in mplayer where broken due to yet another url parsing mistake

    elupus corrected his mistake

So this means ftp streaming will be back in next build ? :)

  • when accessing the rar from another xbox over ftp?

i take it back if it has been fixed in the new builds but that has never worked for me.
